Brilliant simple, lightweight, discrete tent, a step up for comfort from a bivvi (all things are relative!). I can just sit half-in to shelter from wind and rain. Room for me, a small labrador and my kit inside (I'm 5'6' woman). Good internal pockets so don't lose things. Needs good pegging on fairly firm ground to stop it sagging too much in the middle. Used in high wind and rain and felt very cosy but not claustrophobic. The only thing I'd like is opening on both sides, but I guess that would add weight and complicates design.

The Jack Wolfskin Gossamer was brought for my 11 year old son and we have camped with it a few times last year and also in the heat wave recently.

It's a one man tent, so I used my own one, but here's my thoughts and my sons on this one.

The whole tent is connected together in one piece, fly and bug net. The groundsheet is really tough, so no need for a footprint. It has 2 alloy poles, one larger than the other, with the large one inserted towards the front entrance and the small one to the rear. The poles slide through a sleeve and eyelets with a spike and attached to strong webbing in the groundsheet. These are inserted into the ends of the poles. Pitching is quick and easy for me, but my son is not strong enough to bend the poles and insert the eyelet ends at the moment. About 8 to 10 pegs hold the tent up well.

A great feature of this tent and something we did in this very hot recent spell with no fear of rain, is that the main fly sheet can be rolled up from the rear to expose just the bug netting. My son loved that and could look at the stars at night. My son had plenty of room, but there is no vestibule for storing things. He could store things inside and just as a pointer for room. I'm 6' and got inside with my 11 year old son. The tent is too small for sleeping with 2 though (unless in an emergency). Overall a great little tent that's bomb proof. I think we paid Ł80 for it.

I have used this tent for backpacking in New Zealand, England and Wales. It is a great tent due to the lightweight which is ideal for cycling and backpacking. There is plenty of room for one person. Although they are very low in height you can feel a bit claustrophobic. The material is very strong and quite warm and the mesh door stops midges getting inside.

Finally got the chance to road test my Jack Wolfskin Gossamer. Two nights use during mixed weather at a nice site near Andover. Set up quickly easily though I did struggle with a few random gusts of wind. During first night it hammered down and I am pleased to say I stayed bone dry. Dried out quickly on final morning ready to be packed up. A little more roomy than I thought it would be but it is a 1 man backpacking tent, therefore not much extra space. Backpack may well have to remain outside in a bin liner overnight. It is however very airy and has superb ventilation. Overall I am very pleased with this tent and look forward to using it again.
